Archive for 5 July 2008
As many of you know, the midwifery bill has passed in the State Senate, and we have a few weeks to get it passed in the house this session. The current session ends at the end of July. We are eager to have every friend of midwifery to help us by calling, writing letters, or lobbying at the State House. Lobbying is fun and done with consumers and midwives. You don’t have to prepare a speech or anything; it is not intimidating if you have never done this type of thing before. Some of us bring our kiddies if we have to, and if we need to leave a meeting, it isn’t a big deal.
This is where you can confirm your State Rep’s name. Be sure you don’t confuse your State Rep and Federal Rep in Congress.
IF YOUR REPRESENTATIVE IS: DiMasi (North End, downton), or Harkins (Needham, Dover, Medfield) Rushing (parts of Cambridge and Boston), Koutoujian (parts of Watertown, Waltham, and Newton) or Walrath (Hudson, Maynard, Stow, Bolton), you live in important districts. Email us ASAP at firstname.lastname@example.org.
IF YOU CAN ONLY CALL:
Call your state rep and you’ll likely get an aid who will take a message. Ask your rep to ask Speaker DiMesi to pass the midwifery bill 2636 this session. Ask the State Rep to offer the bill’s sponsoring represemntative, Kay Kahn, his or her name for her letter to the Speaker. You don’t need to get into anything about home birth or protecting a woman’s right to choose where to birth, etc. If asked why you support this bill, keep it simple and focused that this is merely a regulatory bill to establish a midwifery licensing board to make midwifery even safer and help MA even more than it is now in solving the OB shortage and keeping C-section rates down.
Then after you hang up, think of everyone else in the same district you know who can call: partners, families, friends. When reps hear 5 constituents call on the same issue, they take notice. If 10 constituents call, they take it seriously, and if 20 call, they think the bill is the center of the universe.
IF YOU CAN COME TO THE STATE HOUSE AND CALL:
We would love to have you. We are planning to organize many trips to the State House for the remaining weeks of July on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Certainly bring your little one if that is the only way you can attend. We serve our cause best by dressing as professionally as possible, too. We travel in groups of midwives and consumers, so there is no pressure for you to speak unless you want to. It may seem daunting if you have never done it before, but it is actually very easy –and even fun!
We meet at 10am outside the coffee shop lobby until about 12:30. The entrance is on the far right side of the building if you are facing the State House with your back to the Common.
Write back and tell me which T, W, or Th you would be available, ideally picking sooner than later. I think there are groups heading to the State house the 15th and 16th. If you are late, sit tight by the 4th floor coffeeshop, and we will find you!
