Bill did not pass…THIS time

The bill was not taken up last night. Rep. Pedone never lifted his hold on the bill, nor responded positively to repeated attempts to negotiate language for the last couple of weeks. As you all know, there was formidable opposition to the bill by the major medical societies.
However, over the last few weeks midwives made quite a splash in the House and garnered much support which will be the building blocks for your return next session!

Rep. Kay Khan worked tirelessly for days on the House floor, getting the support of her colleagues, and attempting to reason with Rep. Pedone and get the Speaker and his staff on board. Please take a moment to thank her at

Coalition midwives stuck it out there last night until nearly twelve, and they and others spent many hours previously up at the state house lobbying and organizing members of the coalition to lobby over the last few weeks. The midwifery network, and especially the Friends of Midwives, activated a fantastic grassroots network that put the bill on the radar screen of House members and strengthened the Coalition for the next time around.
If you would like to help, make sure you sent us an email at with your name, city, and rep’s name, so that we know who was tracked and contacted, as well as the response. Compared to last time, we go into this next session far more organized and aware of our powerful sisterhood across the state.
We have formidable and resourceful opponents with the Mass Medical Society, but this is a big business vs the little gal issue, and the populist cause can win.

Entry filed under: lobbying.

Waiting…waiting… We lost, but we went down fighting. . .

As a CNM representative to the Coalition I would like to take this opportunity to say an enormous THANK YOU to Ann, Robin, Naomi and all the midwifery consumers who called, wrote and lobbied so hard over the past few month on behalf of the Board of Midwifery Bill.
I am amazed by your passion and creativity and look forward to ongoing collaboration into the future. Laurie
