Why not homebirth…..

Yesterday I accompanied my husband for a doctor appointment.  The nurse practitioner who took care of him was asking about our family.  Somehow it came out that our last two children were born at home (25 and 28 years ago).  She was fascinated and asked many questions.  She was fascinated to hear that our midwife was direct entry rather than a nurse midwife.  In the end she sighed and said, “Oh, I wish so much I could do that…..but it will never happen for me.”  I thought it would be intrusive to ask why, so I didn’t.  A million “why’s” passed through my mind, all of which I only wished I could see come to an end where homebirth would never be out of the question for healthy moms and babies.
