Breastfeeding benefits for mama, too

A friend send me this link to an article on the BBC NEWS website and I just found another nice summary here about a study published in the journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology from researchers at the University of Pittsburgh comparing the relationship between the length of time a woman breastfed her child(ren) and her incidence of heart disease later in life (the average age of the 140,00 participants in the 8 yr study was 63).

It’s important to note that so far there has only been shown to be an association — no evidence yet of a clear cause-and-effect relationship — between a decreased risk for heart disease the longer a mother breastfeeds. Nevertheless, this is exciting news for breastfeeding mothers! We all know about the many health benefits breastfeeding bestows on our children, but it’s certainly a not too shabby to get a little health benefit for ourselves in return 😉
