“Are home births safe?”

That was a question someone asked at last week’s panel on birth and technology at BU. It was a great moment–lots of undergrad women in the audience, lots of women’s studies people, etc., and then this question. 

I said, “Yes. Gene can tell you more,” and passed the floor over to one of my co-presenters, who briefly summarized the research findings–including the most recent Canadian study showing the safety of planned, midwife-attended home births.

Just for your information, here’s a link to a nice write-up of that study–one nice thing about it is the several objective measures they look at to determine good outcomes for moms and babies.
