More on the cost-cutting benefits of homebirth

To piggyback on another recent post, I wanted to share the link to this LGBT-friendly site’s great article on the penny-pinching benefits of homebirth (incidentally, their motto is pretty cool–“We’re here, we’re queer, and we’re not going shopping without coupons”).

I love the idea of homebirth as an economical choice as well as a safe and fulfilling one–and, while I don’t know off-hand of a midwife who takes coupons, many midwives do offer sliding-scale fees or allow part of their fees to be paid for in barter (language lessons, babysitting, web design, chiropractic work, etc.).

Another thing I really like about this article is the way it links freedom of choice for birth–i.e., home, hospital, birth center, etc.–with freedom of choice for abortion. Too often those who are pro-choice about abortion forget that true freedom of choice–true freedom to determine what happens to your body and the fetus you are carrying–also necessarily includes the right to freely choose a homebirth.
