NY Homebirth Crisis

I had this story about the closure of NY’s St. Vincent’s Hospital bookmarked since it came out, but never got around to reading it or commenting on it until just now, due to–well, life (!) intervening. At first I was just interested because I St. Vincent’s used to have a birth center, located in the hospital but administratively separate from it, where Ricki Lake famously first became interested in out-of-hospital births. The birth center closed before the hospital proper, though, sadly.

Just in the past few days, though, the closure of St. Vincent’s has suddenly become news again because of its effect on NY’s homebirth midwives, who must have back-up hospital plans to practice–and yep, you guessed it, many of those were at St. Vincent’s.
