Stages of breastfeeding

I was thinking back over the past two years of my nursing relationship with my son, and I think I’ve gone through the following stages:

1. Awe

Oh my gosh, this is amazing! Look, he’s actually suckling! My baby!

2. Concentration

Ack, is he getting enough hindmilk? How is his latch? How is my V-hold? Should I do more breast compression?

3. Bliss

Oh my gosh, this is amazing! This is the best part of my life, and I am so lucky to gaze into my baby’s eyes this way!

4. Preoccupation

Yep, he’s nursing again. I’ll just prop my book up on his shoulder and keep reading. Oh, is that the doorbell?

5. Nostalgia

Oh my gosh, this is amazing! I can’t believe someday this will all be over! It’s all been so sweet and lovely!

What about you? How have your emotions changed throughout the course of breastfeeding?
